What explains the gender gap in top incomes in developing countries? Evidence from Ecuador

Based on tax records data from Ecuador, we analyse gender differences in top income groups 2008 to 2017. Ecuador represents an interesting case as it shares many trends with other countries the region terms of women’s status labour market. While observe a significant increase share women at distribution during this period, remain underrepresented groups, 38.7 per cent 10 group and 22.8 0.1 group. The composition total income—labour, business, capital income—is broadly similar for men top, importance business increasing very top. However, while is more concentrated rental real estate, are likely earn dividends financial returns, figure majority shareholders. In observable characteristics, having (private) tertiary education important than men. contrast, effect spouse who belongs women.
